Favourite recharger after riding?

Don't know exactly which forum this should go under, but this is probably closest one so far even though it is really general banter, since I'm not too concerned with things like electrolyte replacement, glycemic index, protein supplement & what have you.

It's summer down here atm so after a long ride I usually gorge down half a chilled watermelon with a spoon. Yes a whole half, usually around 1.5KG, since I don't really like soft drinks & absolutely love watermelons. It tastes great, rehydrates well, fills me up & thus makes me a happy chappy.

What's yours?

that sounds tasty. except that over here it's -28°C and watermelon isn't the thing. i am all about the heated up apple juice with slices of ginger in it. maybe a little water added for good measure. the stuff gets thick and sticky so it's nice to thin it a bit. the ginger gives a healthy zing.

I'm a big fan of Turkish Apple Tea which is basically diluted apple juice with cinnamon, so I gotta remember to try it with ginger next time.

In winter I still drink cold stuff after a ride though, usually a fruit smoothie of some sort with skim milk, since it doesn't get too cold down here - very rarely below 0c during the day. -28, can't say I envy you atm :-) except perhaps when I forgot to put on sunscreen last week (it was totally overcast when I left) & now have this nasty burn on the back of my neck.

oh, and of course the World's Greatest Drink.

sometimes people actually ask 'what /is/ the WGD? why, that water stuff we keep hearing so much about.

a singer songwriter i heard recent-like had a line in a tune to the effect of 'where i come from everyone can walk on water.' since it freezes solid every winter. and then something to the effect of 'miracles don't happen here,' just life.

it was a tune about how travel sometimes offers the illusion of change and of place difference, yet the real journey is internal. woo. hippies.

great graphic, by the way.

Yeah water is a big favourite as well, definitely my favourite non-alcoholic drink.

"The farther one travels, the less one knows"? The Fab Four's said it years ago :-D

I actually kinda agree with that sort of sentiment, I mean human experience is necessarily introspective, sure one has many choices in terms of extrinsic stimuli , but the aim is essentially the same - whether conscious or otherwise. Wait what am I talk about again? Oh yes, I like water, too.

When was I was kid I went to Harbin in Northern China and it was something like -30c, I remember the whole river froze over & you could get a donkey-powered sled ride across it. The ice sculptures were awesome but my dad's camera stopped working a couple of times since it was so cold!

Thanks for the comment, glad you liked it :-)

Beer.

or bananas.

Or my special banana smoothie which contains 3 bananas, a scoop of protein powder, soya milk and a couple of spoons of glucose powder.

Freshly roasted, just-ground, cafetiere pressed coffee with glucose is nice on a cold day.

Penne with tomato sauce, chilli, garlic, basil, and chickpeas or lentils.

Or... butternut squash soup.

Too many favourites!

I love bananas! I have a banana & a piece of dark choc or some yoghurt before most rides, enough for the pace & distance I do. I don't usually eat a lot of solids afterwards though, especially during summer.

Last year banana crops were destroyed by cyclones in Australia. They were almost 20AUD/8.6GBP a kg. I think poor cyclists suffered the most, apart from the farmers maybe..

I mix up frozen blueberries, non frozen bananas, strawberries and whatever other fruit is lying around with some yoghurt, honey and a little apple juice to get a tasty smoothie. I think I may start a cyclists' favourite food forum!

That sounds sweet as, probably a bit too sweet for me but I absolutely love blueberry shakes - if only they weren't so expensive! Also berry frappie another favourite in summer.
