meandmybicycle

The social network for cyclists

Last weekend I smashed the front forks on the bike that I have used for commuting, touring in three countries and general cycling for 2+1/2 years and around 50,000km. Oddly, I wasn't quite in the mood to take pictures of the wreck, and will probably not get the opportunity as my ride is now at my LBS waiting to be systematically dismantled as soon as the replacement arrives on Tuesday (I'm still salvaging parts such as the pannier rack, pedals, lighting system etc).

You can read the full report from the final ride here, but essentially the damage had been done on a particularly rugged mountain top ride a week earlier, and attempts to ride a century with about 50km of dirt along the way completed the job to the point that the bike was totally unrideable, with forks bent at 45 degrees, leaving me with a 7km walk to a cafe to find a telephone.

Such is life.

That's bad luck Chris...but what you did of the ride sounds great. Better than the concrete jungle I have to make do with most days! Your story has reminded me a bit of a day when I tried to cycle all the way around Lake Mananjou in Sumatra Indonesia...The lake is about 90km round if I remember rightly and it's bang on the Equator so super hot. Aaaanyway the bike I hired was a bit rickety and halfway around the chain snapped! So I ended up hitching a few rides...the most interesting leg was riding pillion on a motorbike carrying the bike over my shoulder. I burnt my leg on the exhaust and was aching like mad when I finally got back to the guesthouse! Still it was an amazing adventure...I made friends with monkeys and even helped a guy build a treehouse. Also some guy who had a little shop tried to get me to marry his daughter. Not sure I'd have had the connection speed to get meandmybicycle running if I had settled down with a fair maiden in Sumatra (and I wouldn't have met Ms meandmybicycle) so all's well that ends well : )
